Watch the movie Jism 2 online on putlockerNEW DELHI: The question over the “lack of water for drinking and irrigation” in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state, has been an old one but in recent times it has risen up to the centre’s notice.
With Uttar Pradesh consuming over half the water of all Indian states, authorities in the state — the only state in India to pass a law in the state legislature – have had to face the heat for not doing enough to conserve water.
“Routine” meetings are being held at the Centre to “address the issue of scarcity of water in UP”, sources in the government said.
In addition to the ruling BJP, the “majority” of state parties in the opposition have also backed the Central government’s effort to pump in funds and resources.
The issue has attracted the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the central government’s nodal agency for coordinating response to such emergencies.
In fact, at a recent meeting of chief ministers of the Northeast, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha states, the PM’s nodal officer for drought, Deepak Agarwal, sought action against UP for “lack of water conservation.”
The reason: “As the biggest state, UP eats up most water. Even if a smaller state takes water from UP, we can no longer afford the food for the lions in the jungle of UP.”
Agarwal also asked the chief ministers to take steps to “curb irrigation in the monsoon season and use only the water which is necessary for their villages.”
After meeting the chief ministers, the NDMA too have proposed to form the National Water Resource Management Commission (NWRC), which will help in strategic planning of water resources in the country, to take stock of the situation in UP.
Agarwal told TOI, “The NWRC would have representation from all the three ministries of water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation. And we will also bring in independent experts to assess the water situation in UP.”
